MIX 013 - COCO ELECTRIK
Our next mix comes from Dan Metalli. One half of Coco Electrik, the project he shares with producer/vocalist Anne. Emerging from London’s late ’90s and early 2000s underground, Dan cut his teeth in the East London scene, playing seminal venues including 333, Catch 22, 93 Feet East and Plastic People. He held a residency at Vice’s Old Blue Last during its formative years, has DJed for Tummy Touch Records, and continues to play today, currently at Brighton’s legendary Great Eastern.
Alongside his DJ work, Dan is part of Coco Electrik. The project first surfaced with Your Love Is Gum, a split 12” with label-mate Tom Vek, followed by further releases on Tummy Touch and Oscillation Records. Their music has reached beyond the dancefloor, with vocals appearing on Acoustic Ladyland’s Cuts & Lies and soundtrack placements including the Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading, Australian series Underbelly, and international ad campaigns.
On the remix tip, Coco Electrik have reworked artists such as Black Devil Disco Club and The Phenomenal Handclap Band, while their own tracks have been flipped by the likes of Mickey Moonlight (Ed Banger), Free Blood (DFA) and Skylab. Live, Coco Electrik have shared stages with Punks Jump Up, Whitey, Alexander Robotnick, Tom Vek and Greco-Roman Soundsystem and more — bringing that same wired energy that defines Dan Metallic’s DJ sets.
